Towers è la mostra di disegni dell’architetto Sergei Tchoban che sarà inaugurata il prossimo 10 novembre a Palazzo Lanfranchi.
Con questa iniziativa il Museo della Grafica partecipa alle celebrazioni dell’850° anniversario dall’inizio della costruzione della Torre di Pisa.
Nel suo lavoro di architetto e nei suoi disegni, Tchoban ha costantemente trattato la torre come tipologia architettonica.
Non ci sono mai state così tante torri come oggi. La costruzione di torri è diventata una sfida per gli architetti di tutto il mondo e anche chi non trova questo compito particolarmente attraente deve comunque confrontarsi con essa. Infatti, è proprio nell’architettura delle torri che si sperimentano le tecniche e i materiali più recenti per raggiungere e superare i limiti estetici e fisici.
Grazie ai suoi studi all’Accademia di Pietroburgo, Sergei Tchoban conosce bene la storia dell’architettura che si riflette nel suo lavoro di progettazione e nei suoi disegni.
La mostra, suddivisa in sei capitoli, riunisce circa 90 disegni che Tchoban ha realizzato durante i suoi numerosi viaggi, soprattutto in Italia.
Attraverso le vedute di varie torri, i visitatori sono invitati a riflettere su questa tipologia architettonica, sul suo ruolo politico e sui pericoli ai quali è esposta.
L’interesse di Tchoban per il fenomeno multiforme della costruzione di torri è evidente nell’abbondanza di disegni in cui l’architetto raffigura questi edifici, torri immaginarie e reali o una combinazione di entrambe. Il disegno, con la sua capacità di rendere l’immaginario vivido come il reale, si rivela per l’artista il mezzo più adatto per esprimere i suoi pensieri sull’architettura.
La mostra sarà accompagnata da un catalogo in italiano e in inglese.
Towers is the exhibition of drawings by architect Sergei Tchoban that will open on 10 November at Palazzo Lanfranchi.
With this initiative the Museo della Grafica participates in the celebrations of the 850th anniversary of the start of the construction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Tchoban in his work as an architect and in his drawings has constantly treated the tower as an architectural typology.
There have never been so many towers as there are today. Tower building has become a challenge for architects all over the world and even those who do not find the task particularly appealing must come to terms with tower construction. For it is precisely in the architecture of towers that the latest techniques and materials are tested in order to reach and exceed aesthetic as well as physical limits.
Thanks to his studies at the Petersburg Academy, Sergei Tchoban is familiar with the history of architecture, which is reflected in his design work and drawings.
Divided into six chapters, the exhibition brings together around 90 drawings that Tchoban made during his numerous trips, especially to Italy.
Through views of various towers, visitors are invited to reflect on this architectural type, its political role and the dangers to which it is exposed.
Tchoban’s interest in the multifaceted phenomenon of tower construction is evident in the abundance of drawings in which the architect depicts these buildings, imaginary and real towers or a combination of both. Drawing, with its ability to make the imaginary as vivid as the real, proves to be the most suitable medium for the artist to express his thoughts on architecture.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue in Italian and English.
Sergei Tchoban
Sergei Tchoban è un architetto e progettista tedesco. Ha studiato architettura
all’Accademia di Belle Arti di San Pietroburgo. Vive in Germania dal 1991 ed
ha la cittadinanza tedesca dal 1995. Dopo aver iniziato a lavorare presso lo studio
NPS Nietz-Prasch-Sigl di Amburgo nel 1992, nel 1995 Tchoban è divenuto socio
amministratore dello studio di architettura oggi denominato TCHOBAN VOSS
Architekten.
Nel 2009 ha istituito la Fondazione Tchoban, che ha sede nel Museo del disegno
architettonico costruito nel 2013 per ospitare la fondazione, che nel corso degli anni
ha presentato numerose mostre sia nella propria sede di Berlino che in altri musei di
tutto il mondo, alcune delle quali in collaborazione con istituzioni rinomate come
il John Soane Museum di Londra, l’Ecole des Beaux Arts di Parigi, l’Albertina di
Vienna, la Kunstbibliothek di Berlino o il Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM).
I disegni architettonici di Tchoban sono presenti nelle collezioni del Victoria &
Albert Museum di Londra, dell’Akademie der Künste di Berlino, dell’Albertina di
Vienna, del Museu Oscar Niemeyer di Curitiba, del Deutsches Architekturmuseum
(DAM) di Francoforte sul Meno, della Kunstbibliothek di Berlino, dell’Istituto
Centrale per la Grafica di Roma, della Kunsthalle di Rostock e in varie collezioni
private.
I disegni di Sergei Tchoban hanno ricevuto numerosi premi internazionali. Nel
2018, Sergei Tchoban è stato insignito dal Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture
and Design del Premio europeo per l’architettura come riconoscimento
alla carriera. Nel 2020 è stato presidente dell’American Society of Architectural
Illustrators, ASAI, di cui è membro dal 1992.
Sergei Tchoban is a German architect and architectural draughtsman. Tchoban
studied architecture at the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. He has lived in
Germany since 1991 and has held German citizenship since 1995. After starting at
NPS Nietz – Prasch – Sigl in Hamburg in 1992, Tchoban became in 1995 managing
partner of the architectural office, now known as TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten.
In 2009, he established the Tchoban Foundation, which is based in the Museum
for Architectural Drawing built for this purpose in 2013. Since then, numerous exhibitions
have been presented there as well as in other museums worldwide, some
of them in cooperation with renowned institutions such as the John Soane Museum
in London, the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, the Albertina in Vienna, the Kunstbibliothek
Berlin or the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM).
Tchoban’s architectural drawings are in the collection of among others the
Victoria& Albert Museum in London, Akademie der Künste in Berlin, Albertina in
Vienna, Museu Oscar Niemeyer in Curitiba, Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM)
in Frankfurt / Main, Kunstbibliothek in Berlin, Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in

Sergei Tchoban’s drawings have been awarded numerous international prizes.
In 2018, Sergei Tchoban was awarded the European Prize for Architecture by the
Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design for his lifework. In 2020,
he was president of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators ASAI, which
he has been a member of since 1992.
